For a long time the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer a viable option.
The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. However, this is just one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can over many generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with disadvantageous ones. This variation in reproduction could be a catalyst to the creation and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed in both science as well as elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into other species in a gradual and predictable way.
More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. In time, genetic variation can lead a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. This shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur which is believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?
Evolution explains how the Earth and all its living species evolved. It is also one of the foundations of biology and helps scientists discover how living things operate and grow. The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions, such as developing treatments, while others are motivated by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. While Creationists may not all be Christian however, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs may be less popular, but their beliefs are as passionate as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it would require a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory says that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. Then these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curricula.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.
On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
